The Perfect Workspace: How to Manage your Desk

Okay, I don't know about yours, but after a full day of admin, work, typing, emailing and filing, my desk ends up in an absolute state. Pens go missing, papers go flying, and those teeny tiny board pins are left on the floor for me to prick myself on another day.

It is disastrous to clear up.

Alas, since buying my new IKEA desk and stationary, I have had a revelation. Making the decision that I would tidy my desk every day was extremely imperative that I stuck to this promise, or disaster would strike again.

Many people prefer different types of desks and can put up with all different levels of mess. Some, even like their desk being messy. But for me, it has to be spic-and-span, completely tidy, completely organised, in order for me to think clearly in my head, at least.

What items revolve around my desk, may you ask? Well, I've got plenty, but I'll share the basics with you, and that you may also have on yours.

  • My Laptop in the center (for blogging, writing, emailing, making notes)
  • A very large two boxes full of pencils, pens, gluesticks, paints, rubbers, and post it notes
  • A big mirror (for makeup)
  • My issue of the latest VOGUE (to keep up with the latest fashion news)
  • White Lamp (you need good light when you're blogging in the evening)!
  • Yankee Candle in Coconut Fresh
  • My Victoria's Secret 'Surf Days' Body Mist (which is BEAUTIFUL!!)
  • Straighteners
  • Two folders, which manage my life, basically

Desks can be difficult to manage space when it comes to growing up. You end up having more and more things to worry about, and before you know it you're piled high in clutter. Here are some top tips on how to manage your space if your desk is small and gets easily cluttered.

  1. Clear your desk regularly. And I mean regularly. Not just once and then never again; because that is how mess is made! And we don't want that :( Every day or every other day is good, or even each time you sit down for a full day of work and admin. Clear up after yourself each day, ensuring everything is back where it was when you first sat down. This will eliminate the chance of you losing anything (which unfortunately I do a lot, and is very frustrating).
  2. Only have your up-most desk essentials on display on your desk. You don't need that 'big mistake' rubber or that spare notepad. Pack it away. Only leave out the things you will use daily, or else it will become very difficult to manage. See below for our top desk essentials to be fully aware.
  3. STORAGE IS EVERYTHING. And I mean everything. Ensure you keep your other things in sections of your room, making sure you know where they are if you need them
  4. Categorize objects and documents. This makes them much more easier and quicker to find, and make will make sure everything is archived and set away if you need to refer to it in future.

If you really want to organize things on your desk, here are a few desk essentials that you will always need at your desk, whether you like it or not.

Make sure you stick to a plan, and stay with it as long as possible. You're desk need no longer be messy!
